RSU VC Inspects Hostels Ahead of Resumption, Reaffirms Commitment to Academic Calendar Integrity
Ahead of the commencement of the 2026/2027 academic session, the Vice-Chancellor of Rivers State University, Prof. Isaac Zeb-Obipi, on Wednesday 14th October, 2026 led an inspection of hostel facilities on the university’s main campus to assess their readiness to accommodate fresh and returning students.
The inspection, which focused on identifying and addressing critical maintenance concerns, covered key areas of the hostels, including toilet and sewage systems, electrical installations, damaged doors and leaking roofs.
Prof. Zeb-Obipi acknowledged that achieving absolute perfection in hostel facilities might be challenging but emphasized that providing students with basic comfort, safety and a conducive living environment remains a priority of the university administration.
He explained that the exercise was also designed to assess the preparedness of hostel officers and other personnel to receive students ahead of resumption.
“With the availability of the Head of Hostels (HoH) and the porters, it has shown that they are indeed prepared to receive our students from Sunday, the 18th of October, 2026, in anticipation of our resumption on the 19th of October, 2026,” the Vice-Chancellor stated.
Prof. Zeb-Obipi was accompanied on the inspection tour by key university officials, including the Acting Director of Works, representatives of the Directorates of Student Affairs and Corporate Affairs, hostel porters and the Acting Chief Security Officer (CSO).
In a strong message to the university community, Prof. Zeb-Obipi reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to academic calendar integrity, describing strict adherence to the Senate-approved academic calendar as a key component of its vision for the university.
He charged staff and students to align their academic and administrative activities with the approved calendar, stressing that lectures, assignments, semester breaks and examinations must take place as scheduled.
“It is our intention to ensure calendar integrity. We are going to do things according to the calendar approved by the Senate. We are going to have our breaks when we should have our breaks and our examinations when we should have our examinations,” the Vice-Chancellor stated.
He explained that maintaining the integrity of the academic calendar goes beyond ensuring the timely completion of lectures and examinations. It also gives students the certainty they need to plan their academic journey and make informed decisions about life after graduation.
According to him, when the university consistently operates within its approved calendar, students can better anticipate the completion of their programmes, determine when they are likely to graduate, and prepare for their next steps, whether in further education, employment, entrepreneurship or other career pursuits.
The Vice-Chancellor noted that an unpredictable academic calendar can disrupt students’ plans and create unnecessary uncertainty about their future. He therefore emphasized that the administration considers calendar integrity essential to academic discipline, effective teaching and learning, and the overall student experience.
The Vice-Chancellor used the forum to announce that the University portal is now open for the payment of hostel accommodation and school fees. He urged students to take their studies seriously from the first day of resumption, while calling on teaching and non-teaching staff to play their respective roles in ensuring that the university delivers on the approved academic schedule.
Prof. Zeb-Obipi further noted that strict compliance with the calendar would enable the university to cover the prescribed curriculum and course content within the stipulated period, while promoting accountability and efficiency across its academic activities.
