RSU Walk for Life Promotes Preventive Healthcare, Healthy Living and Collaboration.
Rivers State University has reiterated its commitment to promoting healthy living and preventive healthcare among members of the University community at the latest edition of the Walk for Life, hosted by Goldash United Football Club on Saturday, August 8, 2026.
Speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Zeb-Obipi, expressed appreciation to Goldash United Football Club for hosting the edition and commended the initiative for providing members of the University community and other participants with an opportunity to engage in physical exercise while strengthening relationships, networking and partnerships.
The Vice-Chancellor noted that the Walk for Life had continued to provide a platform for healthy living, networking, collaboration and partnership. He encouraged participants to make regular medical check-ups an integral part of their lifestyle.
Prof. Zeb-Obipi stressed the importance of early medical screening, citing the experience of a professor whose routine health screening revealed a first-degree heart condition before it could progress into a more serious medical problem.
According to him, regular medical check-ups enable individuals to identify potential health challenges early and take appropriate preventive measures.
The Vice-Chancellor further disclosed plans by the University to strengthen its health-monitoring system by requiring staff to attach a health clearance certificate issued by the Director of Health Services to their appraisal and promotion documentation.
He also acknowledged the various organisations and groups that have supported the Walk for Life initiative, noting that other stakeholders, including the Chairman of Khana Local Government Area and the Port Harcourt Gray Style Club, are expected to participate in hosting future editions.
The President of Goldashe United Football Club expressed appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor for accepting the role of Patron of Goldashe and thanked the University community for providing the club with the opportunity to host the edition.
Also speaking at the event, the Acting Director of the Health Services Department, Dr. Nkemjika Amadi, addressed participants on the topic, “Blood Pressure or Blood Sugar, Which Is More Important?” He explained that both blood pressure and blood sugar are important indicators of an individual’s health and should be monitored regularly.
Participants were encouraged to take advantage of the free health screening provided during the event, particularly for hypertension and diabetes, rather than avoiding medical checks.
Dr. Amadi emphasised that regular health checks help individuals adopt healthier lifestyles and facilitate the early detection of medical conditions, thereby reducing the risk of severe and costly complications.
Following the exercise, participants joined the Vice-Chancellor at the Goldashe United Football Club for a civic reception and the investiture of Prof. Isaac Zeb-Obipi as Patron of the club.
The Chairman of Khana Local Government Area, Dr Thomas Bariere, who served as Chairman of the Occasion, commended Goldashe United Football Club for creating a platform that promotes happiness, light exercise and community interaction. He described Prof. Zeb-Obipi as a worthy leader and a mentor to the younger generation.
The Vice-Chancellor was thereafter decorated by a former Registrar of the University and Patron of the Club, Dr Sydney Enyindah.
In his acceptance speech, Prof. Zeb-Obipi expressed deep gratitude to the President and executive members of the club for the honour bestowed on him.
