RSU UNVEILS FIVE-YEAR STRATEGIC DEVELOPMENT PLAN, CALLS FOR COLLECTIVE COMMITMENT TO INSTITUTIONAL EXCELLENCE

Rivers State University, Nkpolu-Oroworukwo, Port Harcourt, has unveiled its Third Five-Year (2026–2030) Strategic Development Plan, a roadmap aimed at strengthening its position as a leading institution in Nigeria and beyond. The plan was presented during an engagement with the Governing Council, Principal Officers and the University Congregation at the Convocation Arena on March 25, 2026.

The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, The Hon. Okey Wali, SAN, urged stakeholders to align with the university’s strategic direction, stressing that the plan’s success depends on collective commitment, discipline and accountability. He called on government, donor agencies and well-wishers to support its implementation.

Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Isaac Zeb-Obipi, described the plan as a tool to enhance strengths, address weaknesses and respond to challenges through clear goals, objectives and intervention strategies.

Similarly, Chairman of the Strategic Development Planning Committee, Prof. Emeritus Joseph A. Ajienka, noted that the plan reflects the university’s commitment to excellence, innovation and inclusivity, developed through broad consultation across faculties and units.

The plan aims to position the university among Nigeria’s top ten institutions while addressing key challenges such as funding constraints, infrastructure deficits, limited research collaboration and service inefficiencies. It outlines four strategic goals and eight objectives focused on governance improvement, funding expansion, infrastructure development and human capital enhancement.

Key priorities include modernizing facilities, improving student accommodation and security, deploying advanced ICT systems, and strengthening staff development through training and performance management. The university also plans to boost research, innovation and entrepreneurship by reviewing curricula, building industry partnerships and establishing incubation centres.

Estimated at ₦110 billion, the plan will be funded through internal resources, government support, donor contributions, alumni engagement and public-private partnerships. A monitoring and evaluation framework, including a mid-term review, will track progress, while a Strategic Planning Office will oversee implementation.

The university emphasized that the plan is a collective responsibility, offering stakeholders an opportunity to contribute to institutional growth.

With a clear vision and defined priorities, Rivers State University aims to drive innovation, enhance educational quality and strengthen its global relevance.
