On Wednesday, 15th April 2026, the Deputy Governor of Rivers State, Her Excellency, Prof. Ngozi Nma Odu, attended the 129th inaugural lecture of Rivers State University (RSU). The lecture, titled “From Print to Pixel: Digitalizing Library and Information Services in a Knowledge-Based Economy,” was delivered by a former University Librarian of the institution, Prof. Jennifer Ngozi Igwela.

In his opening remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Zeb-Obipi, noted that the world has firmly entered a digital era shaped by technology and information systems.

He challenged academics and stakeholders to rethink how libraries can remain relevant in this rapidly changing environment.

Delivering the lecture, Prof. Igwela, highlighted the urgent need for libraries to evolve beyond traditional print systems. She explained that while print has preserved knowledge for centuries, digital systems now offer faster, broader and more flexible access to information, anytime and anywhere.

Prof. Igwela pointed out the limitations of print-based libraries, including restricted access, time-consuming processes and space constraints. She emphasized that modern users expect instant, remote access to information, making digital systems essential. According to her, factors such as technological advancement, the explosion of information and changing user expectations are driving this shift.

She also explored emerging technologies transforming library services, including artificial intelligence, machine learning, blockchain and augmented reality. These tools, she said, can improve information retrieval, enhance user experience and protect intellectual property through secure digital systems.

Highlighting the evolving role of librarians, Prof. Igwela stressed the importance of continuous training and digital skills. She noted that modern librarians must go beyond traditional roles to become data managers and digital service providers. “Equipment without trained personnel is meaningless,” she cautioned.

Addressing challenges, she acknowledged the digital divide, especially in developing societies where access to internet services and devices remains limited. Despite this, she described digital libraries as vital tools for bridging educational gaps, expanding access to knowledge and reducing social inequalities.

Prof. Igwela emphasized that digitalization does not replace traditional books but complements them. She also called for increased government investment in infrastructure, policy implementation and library development across all levels of education.

In his closing remarks, the Vice-Chancellor reaffirmed the university’s commitment to strengthening its digital infrastructure and aligning with global best practices. He urged policymakers to prioritize investment in knowledge systems, stating that no nation can rise above the quality of its educational resources.

Other dignitaries in attendance included Principal Officers of the University; the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Environment, Koroma/Saakpenwa, Prof. Prince Chinedu Mmom; former Vice-Chancellors of RSU: Emeritus Prof. S. C. Achinewhu, Prof. B. B. Fakae, Prof. Blessing Didia and Prof. Nlerum Okogbule; former Deputy Vice-Chancellors: Prof. Boma Oruwari and Prof. Valentine Omubo-Pepple; former Registrar, Dr. Sydney Enyindah and former University Librarian, Prof. Blessing Ahiauzu, among others.
